The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has officially taken over as chair of the Inter-Regional Economic Communities (RECs) Coordination Platform, marking a significant milestone in Africa's regional integration and cooperation efforts ¹.
This transition occurred on February 14, 2025, with IGAD Executive Secretary, H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, assuming the chairmanship from H.E. Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission.
As the new chair, IGAD has outlined its key priorities, including: Leveraging Digital Innovation & Artificial Intelligence: Harnessing digital technology and AI to drive economic growth and resilience in Africa, enhancing Collaboration with the African Union (AU): Strengthening ties with the AU to ensure RECs play a strategic role in decision-making, fostering Unity & Regional Coordination: Promoting openness, dialogue, and shared ambition among RECs and regional mechanisms, promoting Pan-Africanism & Continental Integration: Advocating for a more integrated, peaceful, and prosperous Africa that speaks with one voice globally.
IGAD's leadership role aims to reinforce regional integration, drive economic growth, and promote peace and security across Africa. By working together, Africa's RECs and AU institutions can shape a more resilient and globally competitive continent.
